When we do what is right, sometimes we suffer for it. Look at Martin Luther King, Jr.
1. Drinking the cup on one level was fulfilling His mission. Jesus knew if He continued to speak the truth, He would be killed for it. In His human mind and flesh, He didn't want to die. But He was still willing to. He spoke the truth to the priests and to Pilate, even though it would cost Him his life.
2. There is more to this, though. You can read about this part in Genesis 15.
Before He was born, Jesus who was the Word of God (John 1:1-3, 14) appeared to Abraham and promised to save and bless Abraham and his descendants forever (including both Jews and Christians). In ancient custom, when you made a sacred promise to someone, or a treaty, it was very serious. You would both walk between butchered animal halves, walk down the bloody path between them, in effect saying, "If I don't keep my promises to you, may I die like these animals."
Interestingly, God didn't make Abraham walk that path. But He walked it twice -- once as fire, once as smoke. Once for Himself, once for Abraham and his descendants forever.
As if to say, "Abraham, If I the Word of the LORD do not keep faith with you, may I die." "And Abraham, if you or your descendants do not keep faith with Me, then may I, the LORD, die."
So that the LORD (the pre-incarnate Christ) took the entire weight of the covenant on Himself.
Now, all of us have broken our promises to God, all of us have sinned, all of us have broken faith with the LORD. So the LORD, Jesus, kept up His side of the bargain, and died on the cross -- to prove that He is forever faithful to us, and to show us that His love is greater than our sins!
Christ was pausing in the Garden. Should He follow through with this ancient bargain He freely made with Abraham? Should He drink the cup? His final answer: Yes.
Because His love is greater than our sin, and He does not hold our sins against us, and He bears the full weight of the covenant on Himself. He freely drank the cup He had agreed to long before, and showed us how great and deep and strong is His eternal love for us!
